This includes websites ranging from simple brochure websites to marketing campaign websites to multi-channel international e-commerce solutions with integrated supply chains. To realise the desired business results, businesses should consider how well the website performs against the following seven tactical areas: • How goal-focused the website is. • The quality of the content. • How easy the website is to use by its intended target audiences. • How well the website projects and communicates its brand identity. • How search engine optimised (SEO) the website is. • Social media channel usage and integration. • Mobile internet users. See Focus on website goals As your website is a business tool it is essential that it helps users achieve business goals such as investor enquiries, membership, sales and data collection. So before you do anything focus on the desired goals and make sure that you: • Review your website goals and ask yourself if there are missed opportunities for the website to help your business. This shouldn’t be considered a one off exercise but a continuous cyclical process to ensure the website always reflects the business needs. • Display contact information on all website pages. • Measure website performance and user interactions. Google Analytics is highly effective and a great free tool • Capture user contact information and communication preferences at every data capture touchpoint gently ie., make the data capture optional and offer something of value in exchange of this data. • Reassure users that you respect their data by including a privacy policy on the website that explains clearly what data is captured, who uses it, how it is used and how the user can be removed from any marketing database. • Make call-to-actions for desired website user interactions such as registrations, product purchases and contact requests clearly visible across the website. Website content quality tips The best content is relevant, clear and useful and available in different media formats; this makes it important to: • Use to promote your products, services and events. • Align page content with photography used. • Ensure that content can be printed, downloaded as a PDF and also available online. • Include third party certifications. • Promote new and updated content and remove old content as soon as it lacks relevancy. • Spell check and proof-read your content before publication. • Create content for your target audiences eg., “conferences” and “demonstrations”. • Cross-sell content across the site. See Website usability tips Make it easy for visitors navigate the website, locate the information they need and perform the tasks required by following these conventions: • Navigation controls should use different colours and styles toindicate when selected or activated. • For sites that include sub-pages, always have a breadcrumbs trail so that the user can tell where they are within the site hierarchy. • All (secondary, primary and tertiary) should use clear language and styling. • Utilise link descriptions to provide tool tips that aid the user journey and set user expectations. • On data capture forms, ensure that mandatory fields are clearly indicated and that any field that fails error validation is highlighted. • When linking to external sites and/or PDF files ensure that they launch in a new browser window. • Use imagery (eg., embedded maps on contact pages) to help provide context and clarity to content. • On large sites provide a site wide free text search. Website branding tips Make sure that your website is unique with a recognisable design that is supported by content that invokes an emotional response by: • Implementing your brand so that it reflects the credibility and reputation of your business • Your website design considering fonts, styles, browser tab/bookmark favicons and colour palletes and is not limited to the logo. • Aligning your social media channel branding with your web and print designs. • Using the same tone of voice for your website copy as you do for social media channel communications. • Using photography that shows off your products, philosophy and innovation in situ with real examples. • Rewarding your customers for their custom with useful content and initiatives that encourage repeat visits. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) tips As more than 85% of prospective customers use the internet to find what they are looking for and 70% of users click a search result within the first page of results. This makes having a good search engine ranking essential. Some easy to implement SEO tips include: • Google listings are ads. All ofyour pages need unique page titles and descriptions with the page description expanding upon and substantiating the page title. All page titles and primary page headers need to be tightly aligned and use the same keywords. Ensure that all your internal links are verbose and make sense out of-context. For example, neveruse link text such as “click here” or “read more”. • Quality backlink diversity. Get your business talked about within a range of industry blogs, societies, universities and local/national press with backlinks to your site. • Outbound links. Be generous with your links and link out to other sites within your content. See • Content freshness. Create content on a regular basis that people will find useful, discuss and link to. • Social signals. Engage with people on social media channels and publish links to your content on these channels. Register your business with Google Places, Bing for Business and Yahoo Local and include local keywords in your content. • Speed matters. Make sure your. Social media tips Love it or loathe it, social media is not only here to stay but will be increasingly be fundamental to all marketing and communications. Businesses need to be active in social media, push and pull content to/from social media channels and encourage user generated content. This may sound challenging and time consuming, but where better to connect with your target audiences than the social media channels that they frequent? Some tips that will help make your social media activities successful include: • Focus on channels used by your customers and target audiences. For B2B companies, this tends to be Twitter and LinkedIn whereas for B2C companies this is often Facebook. • Define the primary business function of your social media channel. For example, customer services, brand engagement or lead generation. • Draft a social media policy that establishes who, what and how social media should be used by the business. • Start slowly and only branch out into other social media channels once you have mastered one. • Brand your social media channels. • Use social media to engage with those influential in your industry. Engage with people every day. • Post information about your products and services on LinkedIn. • Integrate Twitter feeds on to your website. • Provide content sharing facilities on your website to allow sharing content via email & social media. • If you have a blog, allow this to be syndicated via RSS and encourage people to comment upon your posts. • Be generous and give back to those who interact and share your content. • You're human - communicate like one and do not hide behind a brand name. See • Don’t link Twitter to Facebook, instead use Facebook’s wall to post different and longer updates that offered by Twitter’s 140 character limit. • Create and then follow with groups for specific topics or audiences. • Populate your Facebook timeline with achievements and highlights using imagery and content. • Claim your Facebook vanity URL (ie., friendly web address) by getting 25 followers. Mobile site tips The mobile internet is set to overtake fixed internet access by 2014 so it is important to start planning what to do about mobile now, especially if more than 10% of your target audiences are using mobile devices to access your website. When planning to go mobile, some tips to help your business get it right the first time include: • Mobile users are task focused so make sure your mobile site is focused on delivering the content and functionality that the user needs on the move. • Simplify the site design and navigation. • Optimise mobile site speed by displayingonly essential imagery which has been optimised for mobile. • Build the site using HTML5 as this will future proof the site. • Avoid black backgrounds, try and go for dark fonts on light backgrounds. • Test the site on the top four mobile browsers in the UK. Android, iPhone/iPod, Blackberry and Opera as these in the UK. NB: It is expected that Blackberry will continue to drop market share in the coming year significantly making this a medium term tactical requirement for businesses targeting UK users only. • Provide users with the ability to view the desktop website. • Simplify data entry requirements by reducing the number of mandatory fields, using drop down menus and checkboxes. • Ensure that phone numbers and email addresses are clickable. • Decide on your mobile site strategy – this is a choice between creating a separate mobile site or a responsively designed website with a fluid layout that resizes for the mobile device accessing it. 50+ Tools to Automate Your Link Building by, April 28, 2011. Are you a human link builder? If so, ask yourself this: 'if a robot link builder existed, what would I still be able to do that it could not?' Analyze a complex backlink profile and distinguish quality links from spammy ones? Write a funny personal email that gets someone's attention in the right way? Decide when a phone call might be the best outreach method? And what could the robot do faster and better than you? Find every link to a site? Automatically search through and connect each result to external data? Automatically search for contact information on three different pages and score how closely it matched a person's name? Automatically pre-populate data fields in a CRM? If you've ever heard the phrase 'build on your strengths,' the lesson for link building is this: that we need to automate as much of the routine, 'robot work' as possible, and spend more time doing what we're best at: being sentient human link builders. In this post, we'll look at tools that can help link builders shift their workload to computers as much as humanly possible. Backlink Data Let's start with the most basic automation. You need tools to research sites' backlink profiles. These tools crawl the web and build a database of raw data about backlinks. Each tool provides, at minimum, the ability to lookup a list of all the pages linking to a URL or domain, and some include detailed information about each link's anchor text, type (text or image), follow status, authority for the linking page, and in some cases the ability to group, sort, search, and filter the results. •: A well-regarded index of link data with information about anchor text, authority, Class C IPs, and relevance, not to mention good sorting and filtering. My only complaint is that their pricing and user-interface is a bit confusing. •: A very user-friendly tool with anchor text data, follow status, and authority. The only downside is the index may miss some links in the 'deep web.' •: Known for being relative fast to find new links (other indexes are updated monthly), but very limited because it can only return 1,000 links per page or domain and offers no 'extra' data such as follow status or filtering capabilities. But it's free! Yahoo also offers an API (Yahoo BOSS), which according to many, is more current than the Site Explorer website. •: Yes, their 'link:' operator leaves much to be desired, but just because it's incomplete doesn't mean it's useless. •: This new search engine offers tons of free backlink data available from a very deep index. Site-Level Backlink Analysis Many tools offer backlink reports at the site or URL level, but are limited to only the data points they have available. So then what do you do if you want to filter a site's backlinks down to only followed inbound links, with toolbar PageRank of at least 5, and no more than 50 outbound links? Enter site-level backlink analysis tools. These tools gather traditional backlink data with a traditional set of backlink data, often pulled from one or multiple backlink data providers. •: Powered by Yahoo BOSS, Link Diagnosis uses a Firefox extension to pull up to 1,000 links per page and lookup metrics such as the toolbar PageRank of each URL, whether the link actually was found on the page, follow status, anchor text of each link, and aggregate level reporting. •: Also powered by Yahoo, BacklinkWatch! Pulls the first 1,000 links for a page (the most Yahoo will give up), and appends the number of outbound links on the source page along with any flags they find (nofollow, image links, etc.). •: Simple and free tool that analyzes backlinks to a page and appends anchor text, total number of links, outbound links, title of the linking page. One feature I like is that ability to flag links that mention a keyword you've selected. •: Shows backlinks grouped by linking domain, groups them by top level domain (TLD), and provides summary metrics about the number of incoming links and percentage of deep links to the page. •: A free downloadable tool that pulls backlink data from Google, MSN, and Yahoo, crawls the linking pages, and builds a table of information about each link including follow status, number of outbound links, page title, and more. •: A free Firefox extension from iAcquire that pulls the backlinks from Google, Yahoo, and Bing. •: Supplements lists of links produced by Google Webmaster Tools and Yahoo Site Explorer with information about each link's PageRank, anchor text, and follow status. •: Produces various detailed backlink reports with views by link, anchor text, country, IP, and more. Many charts and graphs to aid in the analysis. • Many enterprise SEO packages also offer data-rich site level backlink analysis, including,, RankAbove's,,,, and, and link building specific tools such as, and Cemper's offer powerful backlink analysis features. • see SERP-Level Backlink Analysis It seems like every link builder has a preferred set of data when it comes to competitive analysis. So don't expect any single tool to pull every conceivable piece of data and put them all into same columns you've always used. You still may find yourself exporting data to Excel and merging with other data sources. But any time saved from manually copying and pasting data into spreadsheets (or hiring and managing people to do so) can be spent on more human, value-added activities. •,, and, offer helpful browser extensions that overlay a variety of backlink data directly on search results, so you can assess the backlinks behind each listing in the SERP, right when you're looking at it. • Larger suites like,,,,,, and, also offer detailed backlink data at the SERP level. SEOMoz announced an for their excellent Keyword Difficulty Tool to provide a more integrated SERP analysis. Anyone without research tools for SERP analysis is at a competitive disadvantage. Link Prospecting Tools There are many ways to find link opportunities, and the tools listed below can only really scratch the surface when it comes to the universe of link opportunities that some can find. • Query generators are the original link automation tools. These tools take a keyword and automatically create dozens or hundreds of canned searches to find common link opportunity types (e.g. Resource pages, guest posts, and directories). Here are a few of the most popular:,,, (disclaimer: I co-founded BuzzStream), and Webconf's. I would strongly caution anyone using a list of other people's queries to weed out queries that don't make sense for them -- don't just head down a link building path because a tool suggested you seek a link on every 'inurl:links.html' page in your industry. • Link prospecting tools build upon the query generator idea, but automate the task of visiting each page in and compiling addition metrics (and in some cases, contact info). This can save link builders time by enabling them to prioritize prospects with the highest value. But you can't just take everything the tools give you. Plan to review each prospect to assess its appropriateness to your link building campaign. Here are a few of the most popular:, Adgooroo's, and. • Cocitation or 'hub finder' tools help you find sites that link to multiple competitors. Some look across all links to your competitors, and some analyze the top ranking sites for a given keyword. The best known offerings in this area are, Adgooroo's, Raven's,,,,, and. • Proprietary technique research tools use a combination of their own search queries and analysis rules to generate a list of screened, quality link prospect opportunities. Is known for integrating many of Eric Ward's (a.k.a., 'Link Moses') research methods, though I wouldn't call it an Eric-SaaS just yet. Offers a number of proprietary searches, but also leaves a fair bit of detail and control in users' hands. • Checklist-driven link building tools give users bite-sized link building tasks, such as 'Today you should request a link on DMOZ!' (except their suggestions tend to be more clever than that):,,, and. Next time, I'll cover tools that address contact research, link management (CRM), link outreach management, and link monitoring. A note about some tools I won't cover: tools that scrape SERPs for sites and automatically extract email addresses and send blast mass emails, tools that automate directory submission, 'article marketing,' and blog commenting, services that automate blindly placing link-laden content on an unknown network of sites, or tools to automate reciprocal link exchanges. These tools exist and some people use them, but I have yet to find them to be beneficial. The best strategy for using link building automation tools is to first develop a good process for tracking your link prospecting data and managing your outreach via a structured workflow. Once you have data and process in place, you can start automating some of your routine tasks. The point of using great tools, whether it's an array of three 24' monitors on your desk, an Aeron chair, or fancy link building tools, is to eliminate energy wasted on low value activities, work in new ways, and free you up to focus on what you, the human link builder, is uniquely suited to do. How to Find Authority Websites & Get Links From Them by, August 28, 2012. Links are easy to get, if you don't care where they come from or whether they'll actually help you. I'm literally besieged by emails offering cheap links. I can grab 100 one-way PR 4 links for $200 or less. I can also buy links from this or that domain hoarder who is happy to make a quick deal with me. I can participate in 'safe' link networks where I'm assured that I will see an amazing increase in my rankings and traffic. These are not authority links. Authority links aren't easy to get. They are not $200 for 100 of them, I can assure you. So where are these elusive authorities, how do you identify them and, most importantly, how do you go about snagging a link from one of them? What Is An Authority Site? Let's start by defining what an authority site is not. It's not always the top result in Google. It's not always even found on the first page, depending upon the day and the latest algorithmic changes. Certain niches tend to be spammier, too, with the top results being utter trash. As SEOs, we know not to immediately trust the 'best' results that are served up. But what about your average small business owner or, as I like to say, what about my mom? Bless her heart. If my mom were looking for the best hotel in Pigeon Forge, she'd book the first result she found, then fuss at me for its craptastic bed and lack of closeness to a McDonalds. I run the Internet, to her. Think about gossip. If you hear something, you generally do consider the source. If your friend Karly is known for spreading false information and she tells you that your other friend Jamie just got fired, you probably won't immediately leave Jamie a message that says 'I'm so sorry you got fired!' You'd either ask Jamie or, if he couldn't be reached, you'd ask Jamie's roommate as he always knows what's going on with Jamie. An authority site is just like a person that can be trusted to give you what you're looking for. See Sometimes you get lucky with a search and the first results are true authorities. But generally speaking, using placement as a defining way to identify an authority can seriously backfire, especially when there's a lot of volatility in the SERPs. Let's now look at a truly amazing authoritative site that I can personally vouch for so that we can dig into what does make an authority:. I have no association with them at all. My husband asked one question in the forum (our 'hen' suddenly began crowing last yearpoor little Pearl was actually Mr. Pearl and had to be rehomed) but other than that, my involvement with the site has been limited to reading the forums, looking at coop plans, and reading articles. I've never actually done research before getting a certain type of animal but I thought I should with chickens, and this site came up every single time I did any chicken-related search. As of this moment, they have 148,622 members. Every time I check back, that number has increased. What makes this site an authority is the fact that it ranks for just about everything related to raising chickens in your backyard, and it doesn't do this through keyword stuffing or clever file paths, it does it through the collective knowledge of its users. It's just a really, really good site, period. You instinctively know that you can trust the information here. It's good enough for its 148,622 members, which is good enough for me. Current Ways to Identify an Authority Site Back in the day, you could usually depend on top listings to be authorities. However, that's when we started to manipulate the web in various ways. In 2004 I could rank just about any site that I worked on through cloaking, for example. Given a truly poor site that was not user-friendly, was full of nothing but boring product descriptions, and wasn't one I'd ever buy a thing from, I could help them easily make money. Today, it's much harder as there have are frequent algorithm updates that are designed to combat the latest overused technique, sometimes completely screwing up and accidentally pushing decent sites further down into the results pages. Some people still rely on metrics such as Google's Toolbar PageRank or MozRank to determine a site's authority, but it's simply too easy to employ methods that mean most metrics are about as reliable as Alexa. These days we have social signals to consider, which can be manipulated too of course, but genuine user engagement through social media channels and the site itself is discernible if you take the time to check it out. See You have to work harder than you did years ago, because now, you can't just trust that someone with 15,000 Twitter followers has legitimately gained those followers by being an authority. You may find a post that has 500 tweets and zero comments, and when you dig into who tweeted the post, you'll see that they're mostly automated spam accounts. Today, as much as I hate to say it, you simply can't rely on any metrics to identify an authority site. You have to do the hard work and dig into it. You can't use a tool to accurately find these sites all the time. If you spend some time on the site and trust it, it's probably the type of authority you're looking for. What are the right signals of trust then? For me, social engagement is key. If a site has regularly updated content that is well liked, with people tweeting it, Facebooking it, spreading it on Google Plus, and commenting, that's a great sign that the community trusts it. I'm big on looking at everyone's backlinks (naturally) so if you're well versed in digging into that, go for it, but many people aren't into that and don't have the time, so for those guys, social is your best bet I think. Major Types of Authority Sites With the way the online world works these days, you have to use as many methods as possible in order to find the information that you really want. (My current combination consists of about half traditional search and half social media search. However, I'm leaning more and more towards using social media because the results aren't as volatile – no algorithm changes on Twitter! – and interaction is quick and easy.) Let's go over a few types of authority sites then follow it up with some real life examples that include tips about what to look for. See Authors/Bloggers If you're in an industry that produces a lot of online content often and you have the time and energy to keep up, you probably know who your authority writers are. If you attend a lot of conferences, I imagine the same holds true for speakers. However, not everyone has those luxuries. Here's where I love social media tools like, which gives you tips on people to follow and engage with based on their influence levels. You can also view your influential followers and see who's retweeting you the most. These are great ways to find active social media users in your area, and many times, those are great authorities. Once you find one, check him or her out with a simple Google search. Quick tip: If someone is an authority author, you'll most likely see that they have a strong social presence in a good amount of Google+ social circles, an active Twitter account, and a good amount of articles, as you don't become a great industry writer by writing five posts. Look for writers who create content that is interesting, accurate, useful, and engaging. Local These are sites like your Chamber of Commerce, local education sites, local news sites, trade organizations, charities, radio and news stations, etc. If you wanted to find out what was going on with something locally, think of which site you'd trust, and this is probably your local authority. To find these, you can simply search for topics like 'my city news' and 'my state school.' Many times sites like your Chamber of Commerce will lead you to other great local authority sites through their own links, so make sure you check out any sections like 'Related Links' or 'Resources.' See Also see: Industry Whatever your industry, you probably know of a site or a few sites that you'd go to for relevant information. There may be sites such as umbrella organizations, certification agencies, governing bodies, etc. Searches such as 'my industry' can bring these up but also force you to wade through loads of spam at times. Tacking on keywords like certification, agency, meeting, rules, laws, and annual conference may help you find these authorities. You can also easily use social media to find these. Many times, your authority bloggers will be writing for these sites. See One way I love finding authorities is through an amazing iPad app called, which is like a customized magazine that you can cater to your interests. You add topics to your profile and see relevant (and recent) articles. These are usually from really good sites. News If you don't immediately know whom to trust with online content, set up some for your search query and check the News box. Searches for 'keyword news' will also help you find some good news sites. There are also the typical news sites like CNN, BBC, the New York Times, and your local newspapers. News sites can be tricky since people don't just submit their latest post to CNN. You need to establish a relationship and get noticed, so how can you do this? You obviously need to be writing newsworthy content of course. See You can for one thing, and sites like PRWeb allow you to submit press releases. If you want to be picked up by news sites, you need to make sure you're feeding them your content. Real Life Examples It's not always easy to know where to look to find your authorities. In SEO it's pretty easy as we have loads of great industry publications and conferences. Let's take a look at three examples where it's not so easy and see how we can find what we're looking for. The Bed & Breakfast Let's say you've just purchased a giant house and renovated it to become a new bed and breakfast. I may be wrong here but I'm not sure there are loads of conferences. You're located in a college town and are hoping to attract parents of students who want somewhere nice to stay when they're visiting the kids. You've spent a load of money on the renovation and don't have much left for marketing. What should you do to get some great authority links? I'd contact the local universities and let them know that I was open for business and that students could get a 10 percent discount on a two night stay when booking through a link off the university's housing page. There's a great.edu link that's good for authority in terms of rank and traffic. I'd do the same thing with the alumni association, with boarding schools in the area, and with any major professional sporting arena. When you combine a discount with a great resource, it's a win-win situation. I'd also look into getting listed with a site like the one for the Professional Association of Innkeepers and find out how to sponsor a B&B conference. These would all be great authority links. The Car Dealer I have a friend who sells cars locally so let's look at what he could do: he does have his own website and he works for a big dealer. I'd again suggest using the discount + student angle here and offer a small discount to currently enrolled students at the local colleges who contacted him through his website from a link off the university's site. I'd also recommend that he create a blog where he could write about topics such as reasons to buy new vs. Used (or vice versa) and create fun quizzes that match a user to a car, then reach out to authority bloggers found through social media. He could ask specific authority bloggers if they'd like to guest post and, in return, offer them a test drive on my highest end new car. Maybe there's a great site dedicated to the green movement in town and one of the bloggers could drive a new hybrid for a week and write about her experience. Is a great tool to use to search Twitter bios, which could be really useful hereI'm thinking a search for city + 'living green' or 'environmental' might turn up something interesting. The Dog Groomer What if you are a dog groomer? I'd contact all the vets in the area and see who doesn't offer that service, then ask for a link on their site. If they do offer the service, ask for a link anyway in case one of their patients lives 30 miles away from their office but only 5 miles away from you and needs to get Fluffy trimmed on a tight schedule. I'd do the same with local pet stores and shops that sell pet food and accessories. See I'd also volunteer to help groom dogs once a month at the animal shelter in return for a nice link off their resources page. I'd create a service where I worked with local high school and college students who'd drive to help elderly people bathe their dogs and submit this as a press release in order to get some news links. I'd also make sure the local AARP or Senior Services agencies knew about this service and linked to it on their websites. The Hard Part So now that we know what to look for, how do we get links on these sites? • Ask for it: The most argued-about tactic that I write about is emailing and asking for a link. Many people point out that they ignore these types of emails, but we get plenty of links this way. I'm not suggesting that you limit yourself to this method but from my experience, it is a successful way to build some great links. • Use broken link building tactics: If a link on a site points to a page that no longer exists or a site that isn't in operation any longer, most webmasters do appreciate being informed of that, especially on authority sites with large communities as those webmasters really do want to give their users a good experience, and aren't good experiences. • Produce something interesting or useful and promote it: If you're rehashing the same topic as everyone else, you probably aren't going to generate a ton of links. However, if you're offering something different or exceptionally useful (like disparate groups of related information all contained in one big well-edited list) then you'll naturally attract links. • Get links on sites that these authorities do link to: If you want a link on a popular news site but can't get it, see if there are any sites linked to from that site that are good potentials, and use whatever tactic you like to get a link there. You won't get all the benefit of the target authority but you'll get a bit of it through the links. If Content Is King, What Makes Authority Content? And last but certainly not least, let's talk about what makes authority content. You want links from authority content but you also want to author authority content since that can easily lead to great links for you. Authority content needs to be something that can be verified elsewhere. If all the big sites are saying one thing and you say the opposite, you can't hope that anyone will think that you're the one who's correct, even if it happens to be the case. Authority content needs to be able to back itself up whether it's by citing other sources or by proving a case. See The thing to remember is that one great link is worth many lower-quality ones. For example, I write for a few sites that send me fantastic leads each month. These links do help my site rank higher but for me, the important thing is the direct, qualified leads that I get whenever an article comes out. There are links to my site on many sites that have never once sent me any qualified traffic. They all work together to boost my site's profile but still, I'm not generating business from them for the most part. That's the goal right? You want to have converting traffic, whatever defines your conversion. How to Create a Content Calendar to Correlate SEO Results by, August 29, 2012. The problem we have as search engine optimizers in the current landscape is that our jobs are still about improving results. Our task is to incrementally increase the traffic and revenue through our clients’ website(s) – and yet, this is becoming almost impossible to actually track and measure. How much of that (not set) traffic is generic, brought about because of excellent content-led campaigns, for example? From a retailer’s point of view in particular, how do you track what product pages have really improved as a result of improving their usefulness to users when a large part of the long-tail traffic is completely invisible? Of course, large trends will always be visible and of course, I am over-stating the problem as it stands at the moment for most websites. But all of the issues above mean that it is much more difficult for SEOs to show a direct correlation between their work and improved results. I don’t know how many in the industry have been in situations where a client is shown great results, turns around, and says, “Yeah, but we changed the website so that probably caused most of the uplifts.” Trust me, it’s difficult to take. There have been cases where the client has no tracking on their website since the “new” (re-skinned) website had gone live, resulting in little data to prove the effects of our SEO work. As painful as this is, I now see it potentially happening across the whole industry and want to share one way you can try to guard against these problems. You need to show the value of SEO while also presenting the correlation between SEO activity and results. One method of ensuring you are creating content that is relevant but also interesting is to play word games like the following: Here, there are dead ends like ‘Gangsters and Molls’ (apparently the most popular type of fancy dress party) but there are also areas that would be worth building out further, either by simply thinking up articles now, or by extending the keyword graph that bit further and seeing what other topics it leads to. By building the article titles into a content calendar, you can start to track the direct impact of your activity in the form of traffic uplifts across non-brand terms and ranking improvements for target keywords. You can also use the themes to help you identify bloggers/influencers that might want to engage with your content or add their own opinions. See As a quick example, using advanced search operators with the above techniques means you can start to expand from a narrow product focus into a more rounded, but still relevant online content campaign and find a much broader range of sites to work with. See The best way to start on your own content calendar is using Excel. This allows you to plan a number of different content ‘strings’ while still keeping on top of frequency. The illustration above is easily replicated in Excel and it allows for multiple keyword themes; a lot more than illustrated above. Indeed, if you color code the themes, you can even plan your placements on each row, with dates of publishing across the top, and theme of content using the colour coding. The key to this is not to try and create extra content for no good reason. The goal is to make sure that you’re creating opportunities for engagement from your target market, and ensuring your brand’s voice is out there being heard. There is no one-singular solution to effectively tracking and measuring all traffic. However, every client that has implemented this type of engagement or content outreach has seen significant uplifts in traffic to the site, both via the content hub itself (usually a blog on a sub-folder or sub-domain) but also from the main site. Nothing happens in isolation, but the strong assertion is that this activity is increasing the authority of the domain and therefore, helping it to rank higher and for more keywords. 3 Reasons Why the New Google Shopping is Bad for Ecommerce Merchants by, June 5, 2012. Google has that they will transition Google Product Search away from being free for merchants to list their products into a commercial model built on the Product Listing Ads program. The new paid program will simply be called Google Shopping. What this means is that the free traffic merchants have been getting for nearly a decade through what was called Froogle/Google Base will no longer be free, and essentially turn into a paid comparison shopping engine. Google Product Search has ranked as the because of its ability to send large quantities of high-converting traffic. The change of Google Shopping to a paid comparison shopping engine will definitely have major negative consequences to ecommerce merchants. One Big Change: New Shopping SERPs on the Way Google says they are already experimenting with new Shopping SERPs which include bigger images and a sponsored label to indicate that someone is paying to be there. Check it out: Why The New Google Shopping Sucks for Ecommerce Merchants • The new Google Shopping creates a rift to PPC management firms and merchants who are accustomed to using Google AdWords – bidding at the keyword level and creating product text ads for certain ad groups. The new Google Shopping will not work like that. See • Merchants and Agencies will be required to use a merchant’s Google Product Search data feed to submit to the new Google Shopping. Most merchants and PPC agencies don’t have experience with data feeds. • Bidding is product based, not keyword based. You can only submit your feed and bid via attributes in the feed in Google’s Product Listing Ads interface. • Some small merchants won’t adapt fast enough to take advantage of the program and will lose out on traffic and sales. • The potential for more sales is there, but at what cost? The new Google Shopping will require a high level of technical management with the data feed and constant optimization of the product bids in the campaign. This time and money suck will put a strain on merchants. Get a Jump Start [Deadline: August 15]. Create your first new Google Shopping ad see and get 10 percent off your clicks for the rest of the year. What do you think about the new Google Shopping? As of June 27th Google has run a PageRank update and LivingIM.com has moved up in PR. LivingIM.com in four months of active posting has gone form a PR of 0 to a PR of 2. But is PR really all that important? Their has been a lot of debate on the value of a high PR. One of the biggest reasons I see for increasing your PR is to decrease the time it takes your pages to become indexed. PR is part of an equation to help determine the authority of your site. The higher the PR the higher your authority in Google’s eyes. If your site is of a lower authority you will see that it could take up to two weeks to get your content indexed. If you’re not actively link building your content may not even get indexed. Medium Authority sites will see their content indexed within a week and high authority sites will see content indexed almost as soon as it is published. Despite what people may say, PR is an important factor to consider when building your blog or website. If your site is a PR of N/A to PR of 2, like LivingIM.com, it is considered a low authority site. PR3 – PR5 are considered Medium authority and high authority sites are any with a PR6 and above. Building Authority Strategy: As a case study for 2011 I will aggressively look to increase my sites authority. In order to accomplish this I will do four things: 1. I will post on a consistent schedule of at-least 3-5 posts per week. By years end I want a minimum of 500 pages indexed. These posts will range from a minimum of 250 to over 1000 words. I will continue to develop the theme and the layout of the site. As for backlinks I have approximately 500 external links. My end of the year target is to have 25,000 backlinks, per yahoo site explorer. This will be the biggest hurdle and the greatest payoff. These links will be a mixture of blog comments, Web 2.0 sites, links from video directories, article directories, general directories, press releases, forums, and contextual links from related blogs. In the near future I’ll be putting together a series of articles to help those new to internet marketing get started setting up their first blog and make their first dollars online. I will create posts on my linking, social media, and content strategies. So check back frequently for updates and see.

Just a quick post before I get back to more serious posting to say I’ve started up a new blog, called the, which is about Korean football (meaning 축구). If you’re interested – especially in the run-up to the World Cup – check it out, it’s obviously more light-hearted than this blog, but I hope it’ll be a good introduction to Korean football for anyone who doesn’t know that much, and a good source for people who want to keep track of the Korean national side and players around the world! If you’re interested enough to check out my blog, you should also take a look at the blog, whose author writes frequently good posts about both North and South Korean national sides – we’re a minority in the Korea blogosphere, but the passion’s all there! More real posts to come, I promise! I identified what I considered to be the main places people visit in Korea’s neighbours, China and Japan, and what drives people to visit those places. I also established that the power of pop culture abroad can be an important driving force for tourism at home, including foreign pop culture that references one’s own culture, or uses one’s own country as a setting, the Kill Bill films for example. By that logic, the influence of Korean pop culture abroad, and foreign pop culture referencing Korea, needs to grow. I also layed out a list of various events, places, topics etc that could feature in a sustained growth of Korean pop culture, and indeed, foreign pop culture drawing on Korea as a source material, as has so often been the case with China and Japan. Finally, at the end of the post, I outlined some basic types of travel that people embark on, so we can move on from there to see what Korea specifically has to offer. That list again: • Hiking/exploring • Relaxing, pampered holidays • City stays, particularly in historical or futuristic cities: anywhere that’s unusual and interesting. • Cultural exploration • Action/sports holidays including golf, winter sports etc. For most of these categories, it should be obvious that Korea can provide a uniquely Korean experience of them. Take, Korea may not have the highest mountains you can ever hike, but they have a tremendous history with their mountains, and they have always viewed mountains differently to us. Korea provides hiking routes that take you along the coast, past Buddhist temples, Confucian schools,, shrines to mountain spirits, hot springs, gorges, waterfalls, rivers, views; this list could go on. Now, for any non-jaded, inexperienced Korea traveler, that’s got to be an impressive combination. Relaxing, pampered holidays is a category that could do with some work in Korea, and as far as I’m aware, the closest they get is in Jeju-do. It’s a fine place to visit, with some high quality hotels, scenery, beaches, and some culture if you want it. It has good food, including fresh “sushi.” Not a bad offering, and personally I think it would be a shame to overdevelop the island for the sake of improved “high class” tourism. We must also take into account that the Pacific Islands are not all that far away, and for many people I’m sure it wouldn’t matter how good the facilities were in Jeju-do, Bali’s always going to win. I know there are also some very nice, expensive hotels in Kyŏngju (Gyeongju), complete with plenty of historical and cultural sites to see, but again, it’s a place that it seems a shame to overdevelop with fancy hotels – you lose the soul of the place. It’s therefore a shame that Korea doesn’t have miles and miles of virtually unused tropical beaches, so this probably isn’t the best avenue to take to increase tourism significantly. As for city stays, I think Korea is more than capable of providing an attractive tourist destination. It simply depends on marketing, and accurately identifying what tourists want to see. Seoul clearly meets the western tourists ideas of the East Asian old meets new. It’s got its futuristic buildings, vibrant nightlife, great food, high technology, excellent hotels, all alongside the traditional temples, palaces, shrines and monuments, and it’s surrounded by relatively low, easily-climbable mountains that give you a break from the bustle and a great view. I also think it has a very unusual atmosphere, with some “quirky” features that have the potential to really connect with tourists, such as the 포장마차, the little street stalls selling cheap snack food. Cheonggyecheon, central Seoul On top of that, there’s also Kyŏngju, as I mentioned before, which is a good city to stay in if it’s culture or history you’re after. Pusan (Busan) also offers a good alternative, and both Jeju-si and Sŏgwip’o (Seogwipo) can combine the best of various different types of holiday. When people go on a “cultural trip,” what they’re really after is to see some of the authentic local culture that’s different from what they’ve seen before. On that note, I think that could be achieved anywhere in Korea, but some destinations are more obvious than others: Seoul, Kyŏngju, Jeju-do, Hahoe, temples, mountainous rural areas and others I’m sure. Korea also offers a surprisingly good amount of sports for holiday makers. There are of course numerous golf courses, many at a high international standard, they’re also cheaper than Japan, and regularly classed among the best in Asia. Korea also doesn’t seem to realise how lucky it is to have a few decent winter sports resorts. Admittedly, if it’s altitude you’re after, you’d be best going elsewhere, but for the cost, facilities and relative unspoilt nature of the resorts Korea should be a valid alternative to other more established destinations. In my view, however, Korea is not even on the map in terms of ski resorts, very few people would think of going to Korea for skiing, and I’m sure most companies that people would use to book a winter sports holiday won’t service Korea either. This needs to change, and the potential is all there. It’s also a location that offers more in terms of cultural discovery for most western tourists than Europe or North America. On top of that there’s also horse riding, water sports, snorkeling, SCUBA diving and so on. Also, there are obviously certain specific sites that are unique to Korea, or add to Korea’s value as a tourist destination. For me, one of the best has to be the lava tubes in Jeju-do, that as being of “unequaled quality.” I’d add to this Hallasan, the volcano with the lake-filled crater in the centre of the island, simply for its aesthetic beauty. For completely different reasons the DMZ is also entirely unique. It’s also the only remaining front of the Cold War, and has to be seen to be believed. I know some people have argued that something so sombre, important and serious shouldn’t be treated like a tourist attraction, and I can see where they’re coming from. My view, however, is that people should take the opportunity to see what one of the most devastating conflicts of the last century has done to the two countries, to see partially into a closed country, and to witness firsthand more of the current geopolitical state. It may be upsetting, but we have to learn about the major conflicts of more recent times, witness where they took place, the people who were involved, because it gives us an important perspective. For that same reason, I’m also a fan of the War Memorial Museum. The Korean War is known as ‘The Forgotten War’, but I think it’s about time something was done to change that. This museum goes above and beyond in that respect, dealing not only with the Korean War of the ’50s, but with a history of combat throughout the ages, making it fascinating, informative and very poignant. It also has value as it emphasises the role played by all who fought, as I think most people (who aren’t Koreaphiles) are aware of America sending troops, but not so aware of how many fought from other countries. In that sense, it still really is the Forgotten War, unfortunately. Teardrop display from the War Memorial Museum, made from the dogtags of soldiers who fought in the Korean War When Koreans talk about the beautiful scenery or mountains in their country, and when this is the focus of marketing Korea, I feel it would pay dividends if people could be more specific about which mountains they are referring to. Firstly, there’s no reason to expect that a foreigner won’t be able to muster up at least a vague attempt at pronouncing the proper name, or remembering it. People manage to say “Mount Fuji”, right? Why not Mount Halla? Seorak Mountains? Saying Korea is 70% mountainous isn’t going to attract anyone, it’s also far too vague to give someone a decent impression of the terrain. Not all of Korea’s mountains are particularly beautiful or have certain appealing features. There needs to be an identification of the ones that do have a special appeal – Namsan looks out over the whole of the city, such and such mountain has lots of temples, or a beautiful waterfall, or a giant buddha statue. This approach has worked to some extent in China, and even more so in Japan. No country is entirely amazing; those charged with marketing Korea need to find the parts that they really wish other people could see, and then encourage it, with reasons. The same goes for temples and palaces. There are spectacular examples of both in Korea, and some with incredible histories. These should be made known known. The aim should be to have someone living in Australia, or France, or anywhere else, who’s never had any interest in Korea, to be able to say, “hey, there’s that big temple in Korea, it looks really impressive.” People can picture certain buildings in Japan, China, even if they don’t know the name or anything about them. Korea needs to try and achieve the same level of basic awareness and appeal globally for some of its sites. Another potentially massive selling point for Korea is the food. It really is unique (again, forgive me for using that word so much – but it is), and it’s glorious! Why is Indian food so popular outside of India? Because it’s different, it’s spicy, and because Indian people move in numbers outside of India. It gets slightly adapted for the local palette, and becomes well known and well liked. India is famous for its food, and most people have never eaten Indian food in India. The same can be said for Japanese food, it’s unique, and has spread, and people think of the two together, despite probably never having eaten Japanese food in Japan. Again, Chinese food is the same. Surely Korea could also benefit from its cuisine becoming better known, better marketed, and better adapted outside of Korea. I’ve heard that Korean food is quite popular and well-known in parts of North America, which bodes well, but in other parts of the world it’s definitely under-represented. For example, in my native London, the vast majority of customers in all the Korean restaurants are Korean. Of the ones I’ve been to, the one that is most popular among non-Koreans is the most expensive and the least authentic. But the Chinese food you get in London is generally not that authentic. Neither is the Indian. They adapt to succeed. In fact, there is one reasonably authentic and quite good Korean restaurant near Centre Point in London (called Assa for those who’re interested) that permanently has a sign in its window advertising for staff. It’s in Korean. Nothing wrong with hiring Koreans I suppose, but surely they’d have to be able to speak English to serve in a restaurant in London? And would it be that bad if a non-Korean worked there? This may just be a phenomenon that’s limited to Koreans in Britain, but the small Korean communities in Britain tend to be very insular, and often try and replicate a mini-Korea exclusive to the resident Koreans wherever they live. I’m not bemoaning this, I don’t even think it’s wrong, but there’s also nothing wrong with opening up to others around, and both welcoming them among you, and trying to establish yourself among them. In that way, I’m sure more interest could be generated in everyday things such as Korean food, etiquette and so. But, if you can get people interested in the cuisine in Korea, why not encourage them to visit traditional markets. I’ve heard that some Koreans think that tourists should be discouraged from visiting these markets, as they might be a bit dirty and “backwards.” Ridiculous. They’re great fun, and nothing at all to be ashamed of. I know people who have never been to China know of it’s quirky street markets selling all kinds of wonderments, that would surely be perfectly mundane in China. The same should apply to Korea in my opinion. Folk villages are also great for getting some of the traditional culture and way of life, and what Korea was like before it became thoroughly “modernised.” I’d also obviously advocate Kyŏngju for the same reasons. Kyŏngju should take a leaf out of Kyoto’s book and emphasise the traditional aspects – come on, it’s fun! That said, according to article, Korea’s most popular tourist attraction in terms of number of visitors per year is actually Everland, and four of the most popular nine tourist attractions in East Asia (China, Korea, Japan, the article decides to just call this area ‘Asia’) are theme parks. Time to invest in Everland and Lotte World, methinks. The first point of contact for most tourists to Korea will inevitably be the capital, Seoul, and many won’t even make it outside of the big city. But maybe they don’t have to. • Cheonggyecheon • Any of the futuristic-looking parts • The mountains around it • Cheap, efficient, clean subway – rivals any other in the world, surely • Temples/palaces – the old and new thing again As you will see from, I’m fascinated by Korean shamanism, and I hate the way it’s been suppressed by Koreans. I cannot abide by those Koreans who think it’s “backwards” and doesn’t have a place in modern Korea. Jesus supposedly lived over 2000 years ago, and they can find a place for him, so live and let live, it’s part of the national history, culture and society. I also think this is exactly the sort of thing tourists would love to see, and not in a false, showy sort of way. Practicing shamans should be encouraged, and shamanistic sites should be protected, not destroyed. I also believe Korean shamans could find a place in the pop culture aspect as well. Another draw is Buddhism. It’s always been flavoured with a sense of the exotic in the west, with some famous temples, warrior monks, meditation and so on. Korea has many brilliant temples, a long and vibrant Buddhist tradition, and this should be maintained, and potential tourists should be informed of it. Temple stays are also eye-opening experiences. Final one, apologies for the length of this post again, and this one is quite possibly not at all viable, but it’s not my field. Here goes Reintroduce tigers and bears to the countryside. That would be immense. Tigers are the national animal, and there aren’t even any left! Again, I’ve gone on for so long, I think it’s a suitable place to leave this post. There will be a third post that will deal with how the whole thing should be effectively marketed – the final stretch! Bear with me please, but until that’s up your comments are more than welcome! Welcome to Asadal Thought, a blog about all that is Korean Studies, by a Korean Studies student. If you would like to know more about the aims of this blog, or about me, please visit my About page –> I would also be very interested to see if any Koreans find their way here, and what they think about what I discuss. I do speak Korean, so please do comment or leave messages! Unfortunately I’ve been inspired to begin this blog after deliberating for some time during the penultimate week of my penultimate year of my degree. More worryingly, in the final week I’m required to give two presentations, one about the economic implications of reunification of the two Koreas, and one on any topic of my choice related to contemporary Korean society, which is where this post comes in. One thing more contemporary (albeit not exactly academic) than just about anything else is the success in recent times of a crucial figure in South Korea’s history: Park Ji-sung. Yes, my first ever post on a blog about Korean Studies themes will be about a footballer. Since he moved to Manchester United in 2005, Park has become the first Asian player to play in four Champions League semi-finals, has won three English as of this afternoon, two League Cups, the Club World Cup and the. But this was of course not the great moment that it should have been. He should have been the first Asian player in history to play in the final of the European cup, let alone win it. But he was left out of the squad for the final, denied the chance for this unprecedented glory. The revelation of the team selection for that match came as a huge shock, considering the part Park had played in the quarter and semi-finals, and it was later revealed that manager Alex Ferguson apologised to Park, saying it was one of the most difficult decisions of his managerial career. I was living in Seoul at the time, and I remember staying up well into the early hours of the morning to watch the final, and I was as shocked as everyone else seemed to be. It was particularly devastating for Koreans, who had been waiting to see one of their own lift the greatest trophy in club football for the first time. It was supposed to be a moment of immense national pride for Korea, but instead Park had to sit it out in a suit, and watch as his squad-mates went up to lift the trophy. Koreans seem to act as one when it comes to success on the international stage, whether it be sporting success, business success or even being known for. They crave success and they have a marked desire for the rest of the world to notice them. I can recall various instances of Korean friends asking me whether or not British people knew that Park Ji-sung is Korean, and that we didn’t think he Japanese. Same question relating to Samsung. And do they know about the Korean War? Korea has spent the last half a century driving for economic success, modernisation and globalisation. They resented being weaker than their neighbours as well as the Western powers at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th Centuries, and so they begun this trend. I think that there is a need for validation of all the work they have put in as a nation, as well as a natural desire to be considered by other countries as powerful and important. Koreans have had this instilled in them from an early age for years. The country’s military triumphs of the past are all well known, as are they great figures from history, their success in business, and they are all sources of great pride for the Korean people. They have received very little recognition, however, for sporting success. When Park Ji-sung moved to Manchester United, one of the top teams in the world, it seemed like this barren spell in the international sporting arena was going to come to a glorious end. Park is a talented, hard working and very professional football player. Alex Ferguson clearly appreciates him, as do the Manchester United fans. It is foolish to question the selection policy of the most successful manager in English football history, despite what a good season Park had last year. This year, if anything, he has been even better. He shone against Arsenal in the Champions League semi-final, and even scored a goal today that was wrongly disallowed. He deserves to be named among the squad for the final this year, and it will rightly be a very proud moment for Koreans and for the man himself. Park has earned the right to be considered a sporting hero in Korea. In my opinion, he is not only very good, and successful, but he is also one of the best sporting role models that Koreans have. The Beijing Olympics provided some new success stories for Korean sportspeople, most notably the baseball team, now ranked 2nd in the world, female weightlifter and swimmer, all of whom won gold medals. Yet despite their success, none are as prominent in the Korean mind as Park Ji-sung. In my opinion the best way to analyse him as a positive role model is to compare him with. Kim is undoubtedly a fine athlete, having reached the very top of her sport at a very young age. You only have to watch this video to see that: But for some reason the Korean media constantly demand her to be more than a top sportsperson. She has to be an entertainer, a singer, a dancer, attractive, sexy and clean-cut. Evidently, she is a very good looking young woman, and attractive young women in Korea tend to have their careers and to some extent their lives dominated by that characteristic. The same is happening to Kim, and it is entirely irrelevant to what she does and who she is. She’s marketed through her appearance, and by being something of a jack-of-all-trades on TV shows, see this video: If only more focus could be placed on her sporting prowess and achievements, and not just the whole isn’t this amazing, a girl who does well at sports and she’s pretty, isn’t she talented! I can’t imagine that all the tv appearances and over-exposure will do her skating career much good, but the Korean media seem more preoccupied with making her fit the template of the Korean star than anything else. I suppose the point I’m really trying to make is; what would have happened to her if she was ugly? Take the weightlifter I mentioned previously, for example, Jang Mi-ran. She lifts in the 75+ kg category, and is not the most conventionally attractive woman. However, she is perhaps even more successful and dominant in her own sport than Kim Yu-na is in hers. If you were to type both their names into Korean Google in Korean, Jang Mi-ran (장미란) comes up with 427,000 results, whereas Kim Yu-na (김연아) produces 13,800,000. A Park Ji-sung search produces slightly less results than Kim Yu-na, at 7,240,000, but this is still considerable. Firstly, because he is not known for his good looks. He is also not marketed in this way. He is not known for any misdemeanors, self-promotion or theatrics. He gets on with his job, performs very well, and comes across as a nice guy, who is always professional. He has spoken of overcoming the difficulties of being a flat footed footballer, and his dedication to training from a young, following his heart, rather than pressure to only focus on study. As I’m sure James Turnbull over at would agree, it is a great shame that such a talented woman as Kim Yu-na is becoming almost more renowned for her looks and various other talents (Being good looking might as well be a talent if you listen to some Koreans) rather than for what she is truly good at, and it is disappointing to me that the media continue to portray her way. I haven’t embedded the video because I think that the comments on YouTube prove that the media has drastically altered her image and what she stands for, and it’s quite sad that they (and she) feel that she should be branded in this way. Park is exactly the sort of sporting hero Korea needs, and I for one sincerely hope that he will feature in the final later this month. Step 0: What To Expect. Screen Size Higher screen resolutions ultimately make everything look smaller. A very small percentage of Internet users are still using older resolutions like the once popular 800×600. Sites using a 720px width appear very small on high resolution screens, and don’t leave room for a sidebar. Now most websites are staying somewhere around 960px wide. Some sites are even catering to the latest technology with much wider sites. Although it is important to consider the newest devices, I believe the optimal website width is still 960px wide. ![]() This width caters to the majority of devices and makes your site fit nicely in both 1024px and 1366px wide screens. 960 is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 15. It is a dream for making a perfect grid site. This leads to the popular resource called the “960 grid system“. ![]() Readability A blog, news site or any other type of content-drive site then take readability into consideration. “The ideal line length for text layout is based on the physiology of the human eye. At normal reading distance the arc of the visual field is only a few inches – about the width of a well-designed column of text, or about 12 words per line.” Reading rate and retention both drop as the column widths increase. It is much more difficult to read a wide page than it is to read a moderate column of text. For the web designer, take font-size and resolution into account. In most cases a safe width for a reading column is between 400 and 700 pixels, and choosing the right font size will greatly help your readers. The real question is not 'which document size?' But 'which document width?' I would recommend to design at 1440px X 900px, this way you're in the average of browser sizes (put some guides at 1000px for smaller browsers and ipad). Don't stop your design at 1000px, stop your content at 1000px. Usually I start at this size then I increase my height according to my content. Remember that you can't have the same height for all users because they all have different browser size / different screen resolution. You should use a grid within your design, it's not required, but it'd help you in several things: • Have the same column width between each section, same gap • It'd be way easier to convert it to css if you plan to use a grid system (You can install a Photoshop plugin to generate grid or download some.psd with all the guides) You can have a summary of the 2014's browser sizes (and be sure to check ). Splashes a Lot of Purple on their Logo Purple is very often described using words like imagination, creativity, dignity, nobility and abundance. Stronger shades of purple are more related to spring and romance, whereas darker ones are associated with luxury and wealth. Purple is used in a variety of beauty, fashion and lingerie products, because purple calms and soothes more than any other color. It is also considered to be more feminine and romantic than masculine. When looking at anything purple, many people feel that it appears to be artificial, because of the fact that this color can be found in nature very rarely. Just like red, people can find purple too strong and overpowering, making them feel forced, or pushed, to take a certain action. So it would be very wise to pair purple with other colors like black or white. Great Use of Purple in Web Design I Bet You Didn’t Know In April 2007 it was suggested that early archaea may have used retinal, a purple pigment, instead of chlorophyll, to extract energy from the sun. And white, of course (what color is our website’s background?) Just like birds will always fly, black will always represent modernity, mysteriousness, elegance and power. Whereas grey is a neutral color, representing something very calm and invisible, like shadows. If gray can sometimes look dirty, then white will create the opposite effect. White represents cleanliness openness, simplicity, and minimalism. Great Use of Monochromatic in Web Design I Bet You Didn’t Know In digital photography, monochrome is the capture of only shades of black by the sensor, or by post-processing a color image to present only the perceived brightness by combining the values of multiple channels. – A Fantastic Monochromatic Color Palette 10 Associations with Monochromatic • Power • Elegance • Space • Softness • Heaven • Peace • Innocence • Pessimism • Depression • Boredom Monochromatic Coordinates Black: Hex Triplet: #000000 RGB: (0, 0, 0) Gray: Hex Triplet: #808080 RGB: (128, 128, 128) White: Hex Triplet: #FFFFFF RGB: (255, 255, 255) What Is Your Favourite Color? How does your favorite color make you feel? We have looked at the top 5 colors. Now let’s see what colors do to our human senses and how colors can be mixed in a website’s color scheme. Well in the real world and in the web design world I have two very different picks for favourite colour. In the web design world I, many times, try and go with colours in the blue colour pallete because to me it seems like an honest mixture and instead of jamming a message down a visitors throat it leads them to it. In the real world I am a fan of orange just because there are so many different variations and from different angles and a bit of glare can look like a a whole different tint of orange. Very nice article, thank you. While none of this is new to me as creative director (except some of the “I bet you didn’t know”, good ones!), your points were refreshing and extremely well written. Congratulations for that. As for my feedback. Well, nothing to add here, I mostly wanted to chime in and support your argument for considering the right color palette for the job at hand. This is something we spent a lot of time on at graphility, when planning our rebranding. Since then, most people think our website is clean, professional, minimalist, and elegant — we opted for monochromatic with slight accents of red, mainly. I would love to read your opinion on it. Cheers, and keep up the great writing job! It was my pleasure Hector, And it meant a lot to me to hear, that you enjoyed reading my article. Regards your Graphility’s colour pallette you’ve chosen, I must say monochromatic and red most of the times do mix with each other very good. It makes such a good contrast, considering that for an instance grey is more like a one of those less important colours, whereas dark red is blood colour, bringing up associations like pulse and vibrancy, and therefore bringing everything that’s around it live. Even though, as I noticed this dark red is your action colour, that’s been successfully used for many call-to-action elements on your website. Unfortunately the whole website in general feels like something heavy on my shoulders. And I know exactly what it is that makes me feel so, Hector! It’s because, in my opinion your website’s background is already quite dark and then everything on it, is black. (except only ONE single link on the front page) What if You tried to liven up the background with a touch of red tones, as well as few font changes? Here is just a quick sketch. Hey guys, I hadn’t thought too hard about the “deeper” meanings of my colour choices, but we predominantly made use of a “Burnt” orange look. At the time as feeling it was inviting, it’s not too bright or glare’y on the eyes, but also gets the attention and allows the use of a nice range of contrasting colour without being “in-your-face” and works well with grey-scale or white space and accents. We also went “side-ways” with our primary domain name, our marketing tag-line was that we wanted the visitor and customer to feel a part of our organisation, so we devised “Go Ahead, hotmango me” and used the.me TLD. To some degree, this also works in advertising and end-user recognition, whilst being easy to find amongst the herds of other businesses in our market. Hey Russ, I really like Hotmango’s burned orange shade, as it feels just right. Not too bright and not too dark. The only thing is my eyes would seem to like a bit more of green splashed around in some areas. Your marketing and branding will work so good with your domain Russ. I’ve always been very interested in very good branding so “Go Ahead, Hotmange Me!” with your domain HotMango.me is one amazing idea. You’re a great example on how to find a great solution even if You haven’t got a top-notch accessories (like.com domain, which everyone is going crazy for) Let me ask You Russel who came up with Hotmango’s slogan? HI James, thank you for your very kind comments and yes, now you mention it, I definitely agree with you about maybe more green splashes, I will have to look in to how to work that in, thank you for the great suggestion, it hadn’t crossed my mind to further utilise the green. Hello James:) I started freelancing pretty recently. Currently I’m working with two clients. One of them is an organization and their required colors were a dark shade of blue, a lighter blue and white. I didn’t have to worry too much about that one though. It looks pretty decent. To my eye at least. The other client’s colors are a bit hard to match. They want blue and green. Are the two shades I’m using in the first demonstration layout for now. They informed that they will provide me with the correct ones soon though. This article opened my mind and I did some search on this subject matter and came across this site! It looks promising. I’m hoping to make use of some more tools like this in the future to come up with better results. Thank you for the reply James. Appreciate that.:) •. Nice one Isuru, I really like the dark shade of blue, a lighter blue and white colour palette. It should be really easy to use and make it look pleasant to everyone’s eyes. The second one seems to be tough one, unless you use green just to accent certain parts of the website. Could it be action links/buttons, or could it be any sort of second importance areas like logo slogans or background elements. Just like it has been done quite successfully right here! I have seen the tool you found before and yes, it seems to be quite useful. The other day I stumbled upon and their Colour Palette Search Tool. Isuru do you mind telling me how did you decide to start a career in web design? James, I enjoyed your article. I actually chose my website colours in reverse. They weren’t picked because I liked them, but for the aura or image they convey. Before I started, I wrote a fairly detailed business plan for my project. I am a solopreneur consultant helping clients to raise equity capital for business expansion purposes. As I require clients to prepare a comprehensive business plan, I could hardly not have one of my own, could I? Some time back I discovered an article similar in style to yours that spelled out the effect on readers of particular colours. So in my business plan, I covered the selection of my trading name, tag line and corporate colours for various functional activities, including my website (which incidentally is not quite finished), This research led me to orange on black as the primary view. However, I have had to use contrasting colours here and there simply to break the one-dimensional look. Your article however has reinforced my colour decision, but time will tell if I am successful •. In greece we have the problem called “Clients”. Clients dont really know what they want and they dont trust us to build something minimal and new. They think that web is “press” so they load it with info. The color themes that we use for our clients are based on the branding of the client. For example GoldenHall The Brand was Gold, Black, White so we used these colors. This was made back in 2008. Another example The Brand was green from the color of olive so the site looks like a olive tree:P I love my job (Front End Development) but clients dont give me the opportunity to build something new and fresh using CSS3, Ajax, Responsive etc. Thank You Richard, I just checked out your Optimus Online Marketing website and to be fair I quite liked your black, blue and a bit of gray and white combination. Your website makes me feel sort of calm, as well as makes me want to sit down and start reading anything You have written on it. So because of those easy and relaxing (like blue), yet strong and elegant (like black) colours, your content really jumps into my face. Definitely good colour choice. But I’d really like to hear Richard why did You choose these colours and have You had any other feedback about the colour choice in your website design? That’s a one brilliant article by Derek, isn’t it? It really made me think mate. I shall do some good research into that and have some experiments done, cos now because of You I’m hooked on this topic, thanx alot:) I really liked what he said about how he trains his readers to get used to certain colour as his action colour. But then Casey don’t You think, even though You can make your readers used to a single colour as action one, any of those colours I mentioned in my article would actually make them readers have different feelings about that action button or link? Rean my friend, Inspiration is something amazing, especially when different people can inspire each other. Thanx alot for Your kind words mate. Out of the 3 two-colour combinations You mentioned I personally do prefer black and and orange. Somehow it reminds me of bees, which instantly brings in mind associations like speed, target, hard work and bravery. I think black and orange would definitely be the right colour combination for moto sport or any other sport related content. And by the way, while talking about these two colours I remembered a that made me feel like I want to fall in love with black and orange forever. Well, since you asked, i’ve always saw “black and white” as something limitless, countless Black for me is not even a color – it’s an absence of a color simple void. And that’s how i try to use it most of the time, although it can be very beautiful and elegant. In web-design, I disliked white because it’s so heavily overused (even though it is a basic color), i don’t recall a case where i would use plane white always try to add something to it, just not to look like everybody else.:-) I bet “black and white” debates can take more time than all other colors combined:)) and it’s great •. My favourite colour? I’m quite in love with black and white. Because simplicity and minimalistic, balanced lifestyle is something, I’m very passionately trying to bring into my life’s daily routine, it’s quite obvious why those two are my favourite colours. How it makes me feel? Well, doesn’t it just feel nice to look at a white piece of paper/web page with a black text written on it? It feels, clean, strong, respectful and full of self-believe. I truly believe, that all of those, who choose black on white are the ones who have got something valuable to say or show. It is so valuable and respectful that there is just no need to draw someone’s attention by having fancy colours splashed all over. They know – It’s what they’ve got to say, is what draws people to them and keeps them glued there. I can’t wait to find out what’s your favourite colour and how it makes You feel:). |
